For some, it’s just not Christmastime without enjoying a glass or two of eggnog. That’s how our Test Kitchen feels! But for our pros, a glass of any ol’ eggnog won’t do; it has to be the best eggnog.

If you don’t have time to stir up a batch of homemade eggnog, the store-bought variety can still hit the spotprovided it’s the tastiest option out there. That’s why our crew raided our local supermarket and grabbed every brand they could find.

How Our Test Kitchen Sampled Eggnog

For this test, our team sampled four brands in a blind test. You may find other options available locally, but we snagged every option available in our Milwaukee grocery stores. Every brand we tried was nonalcoholic. With that in mind, every sip was judged in these three categories:

  • Appearance:Eggnog can vary in color, but generally they range from creamy white to pale yellow. Artificially hued eggnogs won’t pass our test.
  • Texture:A glass of eggnog should have a rich, velvety texture. It should feel more robust than a glass of milk but not unpleasantly thick.
  • Flavor:Eggnog, whether homemade or store-bought, should taste of cream, vanilla and, of course, nutmegall in perfect balance.

In the end, only one made our nice list (AKA our Test Kitchen-Preferred list).

The Best Eggnog: Southern Comfort Traditional Eggnog

Southern Comfort Eggnog

In this test,Southern Comfort Traditional Eggnog really made our team’s spirits bright. That’s because it checked off every wish on our list.

Before even taking a sip, our pros could tell this was eggnog to savor. “It has a lovely golden color with small flecks of grated nutmeg,” says Mark Neufang in the Test Kitchen. While only a sprinkling is used, even in homemade recipes, this baking spice really makes this Christmastime drink taste like the holiday season.

But the look of this bev is just the beginning. With one sip, this eggnog had our team wanting to jingle bell rock. The texture is creamy and custard-like, according to the Test Kitchen’s Shannon Norris. This decadent texture makes Southern Comfort eggnog feel like a treat to savor.

Now, when it comes to flavor, our team universally agreed that this eggnog was the best.“Tastes nice and rich,” says Mark. “It’s full of vanilla flavor with a small hint of nutmeg.” This whisper of spice lingers as you sip and keeps you coming back for more as you relax by the fire.

What to Mix with Eggnog

We sampled different kinds of nonalcoholic eggnogs, so you can feel good about sharing our top pick with the entire family. However, if you want to add a little Christmas spirit to your nog, feel free!

Rum is the traditional accompaniment for eggnog. It pairs so well with the flavors of vanilla and nutmeg. However, we’d be remiss not to suggest a splash of whiskey as well since Southern Comfort was crowned the best eggnog in our taste test.

If you check out the side of the carton, this brand recommends a 4:1 ratio of eggnog to whiskey. You can serve this drink cold or warm. Garnish with a sprinkling of nutmeg or even a cinnamon stick.

After enjoying a glass of this holiday tipple, use the rest of the carton to make these recipes with eggnog (like this amazing eggnog pie!).

Move over, pumpkin spice lattes! It’s time for eggnog season! For many, it’s just not Christmas time without the drinkwhether hot or cold, boozy or family-friendly.

But before you pour yourself a glass, it’s time to learn exactly what is eggnog anyway.

What Is Eggnog?

In simplest terms, it’s a delightfully creamy sweet drink made with eggs, cream and a variety of spices.

It has a fun historyand a fun name. “Nog is a word for a kind of beer that was brewed in England, and that’s where the drink originated,” says Very Merry Cocktails author Jessica Strand. “It crossed over to the colonies and has since been a part of the US and Canada’s holiday traditions.”

Eggnog is usually served cold, but you may choose to heat it, especially if you’re coming in from making snowmen or ice skating. And you can spike eggnog with a splash of brandy, rum or your spirit of choice, but it’s also delicious simply spiked with vanilla or cinnamon.

What’s in Eggnog?

Gingerbread Fruitcake Cookies; Homemade Pizza; Old Fashioned Eggnog

The drink is traditionally made with eggsof courseas well as whole milk, heavy whipping cream, sugar and nutmeg. Some eggnog recipes also call for a bit of vanilla extract or cinnamon.

Strand says that using real eggs, rather than an eggnog mix, makes an enormous difference in taste and texture. She uses a full dozen eggs to make enough eggnog for 24 drinks!

What Does Eggnog Taste Like?

Eggnog might be the closest you’ll come to drinking melted custard. Think sweet and creamy and very richa small punch cup full is usually plenty.

Eggnog has such a traditional Christmas flavor that it’s also used to make holiday recipes like eggnog biscotti, eggnog fudgeandeggnog fruit fluff. McDonald’s even has a seasonal eggnog shake.

How Do You Make Eggnog?

You can buy the best eggnog, but it’s not hard to make your own. Most recipes will call for plenty of eggs (it’s smart to buy pasteurized eggs).

Whipping cream, whole milk, sugar, vanilla and spices are common ingredients. I recommend our homemade eggnog or vegan eggnog that uses cashews and coconut milk to make a creamy holiday drink.

Want to deck out your eggnog for a Christmas party? Strand suggests adding orange zest on top as a garnish or topping your drink with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cocoa. Cheers to the season!

Why Is Eggnog a Christmas Drink?

Thca163696b12 10 1bc Crop

Strand says the specific taste of eggnog is wrapped up with memories of Christmas, thanks to flavors like cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla bean, which embody the winter season.

It’s so rich that it makes for a nice holiday party treat, too!

  • Eggnog Tips

How can you make sure eggnog is safe to drink?

Eggnog made with raw eggs is safe to drink if the eggs have been heated to 160 degrees. This will kill any bacteria, like salmonella, that may be present in the raw eggs. When heating the egg, sugar, and milk mixture, slow and low is the way to go. Stirring the mixture while heating slowly on low gently warms the mixture without scrambling the eggs. Just be sure you take the time to get it to 160 degrees.

How do you make eggnog alcoholic?

If you want to add alcohol to your eggnog, start with 1/4 cup brandy, bourbon, rum or whisky added at the same time as the vanilla, or after cooling the eggnog. Add more to taste, if desired. Serve your boozy eggnog with these Christmas-ready spiced eggnog rum cookies. (Here's more on what eggnog is and why we drink it at Christmastime.)

    How should you store eggnog?

Eggnog may be stored, covered, in the refrigerator for several days. Just give it a whisk before serving.

    Eggnog Milkshake Tips

    What does eggnog taste like?

Thick and creamy, eggnog tastes like spice-flavored milk. Traditional eggnog usually consists of egg yolks, sugar, heavy whipping cream, milk, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla.

How do you thicken a milkshake?

You can thicken this milkshake recipe by adding another scoop of vanilla ice cream, substituting heavy whipping cream for the milk (like classic eggnog!) or blending crushed ice cubes into the milkshake mixture.

    Eggnog Coffee Tips

What kind of eggnog should you use to make Eggnog Coffee?

Any eggnog from the store should be perfectly fine to mix into hot coffee or even tea! We like to use thicker brands, such as our Test Kitchen's favorite, Southern Comfort Traditional Egg Nog, because it gives the same mouthfeel as heavy cream. You can also make your own homemade eggnog if you’re feeling up to it! Just make sure you use a recipe that heats the egg to a safe temperature. You don’t want to be drinking raw eggs in your coffee.

What else can you add to Eggnog Coffee?

You can add any of the warm spices you typically use in winter baking. Think cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and ginger. If you’re sipping on your coffee after dinner, you might consider adding a splash of bourbon, brandy or even rum to go with one of these eggnog-inspired desserts.

Can you make this recipe into an eggnog latte?

Depending on the eggnog you select, you can certainly froth it to make a latte. Selecting an eggnog that is lower in fat is going to make things much easier because those varieties will foam up better. You can use an electric frothing machine or the frothing attachment of your espresso maker. Or whisk it in a saucepan over medium-high heat until it's hot and foamy. —James Schend, Taste of Home Deputy Culinary Editor

    Ingredients

    • 1-3/4 cups sugar
    • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 2 quarts 2% milk
    • 6 large eggs, beaten
    • 1 cup apricot brandy or brandy
    • 1/2 cup rum
    • 2 tablespoons bourbon
    • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
    • 1 quart half-and-half cream
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • Optional: Turbinado (washed raw) sugar, ground cinnamon and pirouette cookies

    Directions

    1. In a Dutch oven, combine the sugar, flour and salt. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until thickened and bubbly, 15 minutes. Reduce heat; cook and stir 2 minutes longer. Remove from the heat.
    2. Stir a small amount of hot mixture into eggs; return all to the pan, stirring constantly. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture is slightly thickened and coats the back of a spoon, 5 minutes.
    3. Transfer to a large bowl; cool quickly by placing bowl in ice water and stirring for 2 minutes. Stir in the brandy, rum, bourbon and vanilla. Cool completely. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours. Just before serving, stir in cream and nutmeg. If desired, mix turbinado sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl; dip rims of glasses into a shallow dish of water then into the sugar mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Fill glasses with eggnog and if desired, serve with pirouette cookies.

    Brandy Eggnog Tips

How long will brandy eggnog last?

Brandy eggnog is best served chilled, so feel free to make it the day before it’s served. Eggnog with spirits will last 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator, but keep in mind that a refrigerator packed to the brim with holiday leftovers can lower the temperature inside. To ensure that your eggnog and holiday foods are safe, an inexpensive oven/refrigerator thermometer can be purchased at your local grocery store.

Which kinds of brandy, rum and bourbon should you use to make brandy eggnog?

Personal preference reigns here, but if you’re looking for a nonalcoholic alternative that still adds flavor, try some of the nonalcoholic spirits available at most local liquor stores. If you’re serving vegan guests or those who need to avoid dairy, try making them vegan eggnog.

How do you serve brandy eggnog?

A Christmas gathering and a fresh batch of eggnog is the perfect occasion to break out some glasses and your punch bowl. No punch bowl? No problem! Serve your guests individually with any small cup or glass. Because of the alcohol in this recipe, think small when it comes to glasses—like martini glasses, vintage glassware, or even disposable tumblers. Sprinkle a dash of nutmeg on top just before serving. Can't get enough eggnog? Try making eggnog fudge or eggnog fruit fluff to get your fix.
