When it comes to baking up a batch of my favorite cookies, sampling the dough is one of the best parts. Yes, I know it’s definitely not food-safe, but it’s just so tempting! If only there was a way for me to get my cookie dough fix without it being bad for the ol’ belly…

Enter edible cookie doughs! Over the past few years, I’ve seen more and more of these safe-to-eat doughs pop up in grocery stores. They’ve got all the good stuff about cookie dough that I love—the chocolate chips, the brown sugar flavor and that gooey texture—but without the whole raw egg and raw flour issue. But how do these doughs stack up?

Find out if you can eat raw cookie dough.

Well, me and a team of cookie fanatics got together to put six brands to the test to see just how much like the real thing these snackable doughs could be. For this test we tried the chocolate chip cookie flavors from Batterlicious, Big Dipper, The Cookie Dough Café, Doozie Bar, Edoughble and Sweet Megan. Check out our findings. (You might just discover a new brand to love!)

Doozie Bar: A Perfectly Portable Snack

“I love the texture here, but there’s just not a lot of flavor.”

When I think of edible cookie dough, based off what I’ve seen in the stores, I think of a carton or a tub ready for the scooping. What I don’t think of is a granola bar-sized block of dough wrapped up for individual servings. However, that’s the genius of the Doozie Bar. Sold in single-serve wrappers, the Doozie Bar looks like the perfect on-the-go snack for sweet fanatics. A lot of our testers loved the idea of getting a fix of cookie dough this way. (Psst! Don’t miss our best recipes for sweet snacks, here)

When it came down to the taste of this bar, though, we weren’t quite as enthused. The Doozie Bar managed to get an amazing cookie dough texture, but we struggled to get that classic cookie dough flavor. We were missing a bit of butteriness and sweetness from brown sugar. Though flavor-wise, this wasn’t a home run, but we would definitely grab one of the brand’s other flavors for a try.

Sweet Megan: An Allergen-Free Choice

“This has got to be the healthy one.”

This brand has the distinction of being the only option that can be eaten straight from the jar or made into cookies. This is so smart for people (like myself) that want it both ways. Craving cookies right now? Try our perfect chocolate chip cookie recipes.

Right from the start, we could all tell that this dough was different. It had a decidedly different look and texture than the other doughs in our lineup. This dough also tasted much different than the others. Taking hefty spoonfuls, we found that this edible dough was a bit looser than the rest, more of the consistency of batter than a dough. And taste-wise, we all picked up on one distinct flavor: oatmeal. I could have sworn I grabbed the wrong dough—it had to be an oatmeal variety!

Except that this was, in fact, the chocolate chip option from Sweet Megan. It turns out we weren’t just crazy, this dough’s first ingredient is oats. After unveiling the brands post-testing, we dove deeper into the ingredients on this edible cookie dough. The offering from Sweet Megan is, in fact, allergy free, meaning it’s free of gluten, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs and dairy. In this regard, Sweet Megan is a great option for those with any allergies, but it wouldn’t be our first choice for folks without any sensitivities. We just miss the butter too much!

Big Dipper: Realistic Texture

“This reminds me of cookie dough candy.”

Next up in our cookie dough competition was Big Dipper. This chocolate chip cookie dough, packaged up in an ice cream-like pint, definitely improved on the edible cookie dough formula, but didn’t quite have what it takes for our top spots.

Immediately the testers commented on how realistic the texture of this edible cookie dough was. It really looked and felt like you took a giant spoonful right out of the mixing bowl. However, after taking another bite, we started to pick up on a few artificial notes. Sure, this concoction tasted like cookie dough of a certain kind, but more like the edible cookie cookie dough that you might find in ice cream or even those cookie dough candies that you find at the movie theater. Once we pinpointed that exact and not quite authentic taste, we couldn’t quite shake it. Though that didn’t stop us from going back for a second (or third) bite.

Our Top Picks

When it came to choosing our favorite, our team couldn’t narrow the results down just one. These three doughs ranked #1 for different reasons. Check out what sets Batterlicious, the Cookie Dough Café and Edoughble brands apart.

The Cookie Dough Café: The Most Buttery

“Ooh this is so creamy.”

When we say we couldn’t pick a favorite among these top contenders, it’s so true. Each had something unique to offer, making it the very best for certain testers. In the case of the Cookie Dough Café’s chocolate chip offering, it was the amazing butteriness. It truly tasted like you whipped up a batch of these cookies and dipped a spoon in.

The testers remarked over and over again how creamy this option was. It managed to walk the line of being rich but also amazingly fluffy. We also appreciated the amount of chocolate flecked into this dough. There was no fishing for chips in this one!

Batterlicious: The Sweetest

“I have to say, the texture is spot-on.”

Tied up with the Cookie Dough Café, was the chocolate chip cookie dough from Batterlicious. This treat gained top marks for its super realistic cookie dough texture. Sure, it was creamy, but it also had a bit of that gooey factor that comes with the real deal dough.

In fact, one tester said, “this just seems homemade to me,” and really isn’t that the highest type of praise in an edible cookie dough competition? But beyond the realistic look and feel, we liked Batterlicious’s giant chocolate chips. Many folks also commented on how this brand was exceptionally sweet, and they even picked up on notes of butterscotch (which is different from caramel and toffee). For folks that love that sweet flavor, this brand is for you.

Edoughble: For Chocolate Lovers

“The chocolate in this one is really, like really, good.”

Last but certainly not least was the “Chocolate Chip Off the Ol’ Block” flavor from Edoughble. Opening up the ice cream-like pint container, we marveled at how pretty this looked out of the box. It looked like the dough had been whipped—we knew this was going to be a tasty treat.

Indulging in the light, fluffy batter we really relished in this brand’s great balance of brown sugar. It had that light, caramel-y sweetness that makes chocolate chip cookies different than a plain old sugar cookie. What we also appreciated about this brand was the richness of the chocolate chips. Just from our small samples, you could tell it was a quality dark chocolate. After all, just because this is a silly snack, doesn’t mean you should scrimp on quality! And when it came down to going back for seconds (and thirds), we happily grabbed a few extra spoonfuls.

The Takeaways

Since edible cookie dough is a relatively new phenomenon and there aren’t a lot of household names out there in the market, it can be so hard to know what’s the best dough to buy. That’s why I think this test was so useful. We all walked away with a new brand to scout out next time we’re craving something exceptionally sweet and fun. Plus, we all have a new back pocket ingredient for our most decadent sundaes, milkshakes and all other manner of sweets.
