How to Plan the Perfect Bridal Shower https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-plan-a-bridal-shower/ Wed, 11 May 2022 20:25:02 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1433708 Stumped on how to plan a bridal shower? Relieve your worries with our helpful bridal shower planning to-do list!

The post How to Plan the Perfect Bridal Shower appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Whether you’re the maid of honor, a bridesmaid, friend or family member of the bride, figuring out how to plan a bridal shower can be a bit stressful. There’s no sugar coating that. But, it really doesn’t have to be.

Luckily, we’ve laid out the ultimate bridal shower to-do list to help get you started on the right track. From choosing bridal shower favorsto bridal shower drinks, you can sit back and relax (and maybe enjoy a mimosa, or two) knowing that we’ve got your back with this handy guide.

Bridal Shower Planning FAQs

What is a bridal shower?

Bridal showers celebrate the bride before her big day. Traditionally, it’s an event where the closest women in the bride’s life get together to shower the bride with bridal shower gifts and well wishes. They usually consist of an afternoon of games, snacks and gift opening. Bridal showers are typically three months before the wedding and last for about 2 to 4 hours.

Who throws the bridal shower?

Traditionally, it was frowned up for the bride’s family to plan the bride’s shower. It was seen as “gift grabby.” Now, there aren’t as many rules for who wants to host. Whoever wants to host the shower, can! Well everyone expect the bride, of course. This is her time to sit back and relax. Most commonly the bride’s mother, her future mother-in-law, her bridesmaids, family members or friends usually step in to party plan.

Whom should I invite?

There is one rule you must abide by for invites: you cannot invite anyone who is not also invited to the wedding. This is a big bridal shower no-no. Only exception is for coworker bridal showers. But, everyone else is fair game!

Depending on what you think your bride would prefer, some showers are now co-ed. Coined a wedding shower, these large co-ed parties are typically in the late afternoon compared to a bridal shower which is thrown during the day. Bridal showers can range from an intimate gathering of eight people to a co-ed “wedding shower” of 50+ people, so it’s really up to what the bride would prefer.

Where should the bridal shower be?

You can hosts bridal showers anywhere. Truly, anywhere. From a destination bridal shower to one in the bride’s backyard. The venue, in addition to the decor, food and drinks choices, are typically based off of a bridal shower theme. If you’re hosting a rustic themed bridal shower, a beautiful barn venue would be the stunning. Or is your bride a huuuge brunch lover? Try a bridal shower brunch at a fancy brunch spot instead. The options are endless!

What food do I serve at a bridal shower?

Now, here’s the fun part. Showers always have the best snacks and drinks. Usually bridal showers serve small plates or appetizers, in addition to some fun alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) drinks and some beautiful bridal shower desserts, of course. Another to keep in mind is that the food and drink menus are typically based off of the bridal shower theme.

Bridal Shower Planning Checklist

Early Planning:

  • Chat with bride about expectations and wishes for the party (unless it’s a surprise shower!)
  • Pick shower theme
  • Compile guest list
  • Set date and time of shower
  • Make reservations for venue or rented equipment (if necessary)

Month of:

  • Send out invitations
  • Purchase or create DIY decorations and bridal shower favors
  • Select food and drink menu and purchase nonperishables
  • Plan games and activities for shower

Week of:

  • Confirm guest list, reservations and any delivery items
  • Buy last minute food, drinks or decorations
  • Assemble favors and DIY decorations
  • Compile the perfect bridal shower playlist

Day of:

  • Set up shower’s gift, food and drink stations
  • Organize a surprise visit from her fiance (with flower in tow, of course)
  • Lead the day with games, activities and of course, a toast to the bride!

Boho home decor is still on the rise. Arched wicker bookshelves, eclectic rugs and oversized houseplants are staples of this decorating style. And at the heart of it all? Pampas grass. Here are a few of our favorite pampas grass decor ideas that add a touch of boho to any space.

What Is Pampas Grass?

Native to South America, pampas grass is a tall, fluffy plant that thrives in warmer temperatures. It comes in a variety of colors, and can grow up to 10 feet high and wide. Plants take up to three years to bloom and create those soft, Instagram-worthy plumes.

For interior decorating purposes, we recommend using dried or faux pampas grass. Stems are widely available online or at craft stores. (Here’s how to find the best grocery store flowers.)

Pampas Grass Decor Ideas

Pampas grass is so versatile and looks stylish in a variety of rooms. Here are three easy ways to decorate with pampas grass and bring this dreamy trend into your home.

Pampas Grass Bouquet

Bouquets are one of the most popular pampas grass decor ideas. Pampas grass looks stunning on its own, but you can also find it in an arranged bouquetpeeking above a mix of other dried flowers like eucalyptus, fuzzy bunny tails and palms. Some even have pops of color like greens, oranges and pinks.

No matter which style you choose, place your bouquet inside a funky colored plant pot or a clear glass vase. (Learn more about the best vase shapes for your flower arrangement.)

Pampas Grass Wreath

There’s nothing more welcoming than a pampas grass wreath. Whether you’re looking for a traditional all-pampas wreath or a sophisticated hanger adorned with beads, ribbon and other dried flowers, we’ve pulled a variety of pretty options.

Add one to your front door for a classic look. Or, get creative and hang any of these wreaths in an unconventional place, like above a bed in the master bedroom or in your little one’s nursery.

Pampas Grass Clouds

Here’s a pampas grass decor item that’s sure to impress: a pampas grass cloud! These pampas “chandeliers” float above the room, similar to a cloud.

Commonly found hanging above dining room tables and in cozy bedroom nooks, these arrangements know how to make a statement. (That’s why you can find them as wedding centerpieces, too!) Just attach to the ceiling with twine to transform any room into a dreamy oasis. (Psst! To make your flower arrangements look more professional, try this viral tape trick.)

HGTV is home to so many of our favorite shows, from Fixer Upper to Home Town. I know I could spend countless hours watching Joanna choosing paint colors and Chip knocking down walls on demo day (especially with Joanna’s pumpkin cream cheese bread in hand).

Property Brothers is yet another home makeover show we have grown to love. Jonathan and Drew have a way of making every home sophisticated and thankfully, you can execute many of their tips on your own with the help of some paint and a few new pieces of decor!

The Best Property BrothersDesign Ideas

1. Choose Paint That Works Wonders

Add contrast or brighten up a room with a dab of paint. Get creative with it and paint featured walls or fun and funky shapes or patterns for visual interest. To make things even easier, Jonathan and Drew handpicked their favorite paint colors they swear never go out of style, like classic gray, muted white and a wonderful blue-green color. No matter what color you choose, just make sure to avoid these paint colors.

2. Add Lamps for Cozy Ambience

Lamp recommended by the property brothers

Overhead lights can make rooms feel sterile or unwelcoming. Glowy, warm lamp light brings a homey feel to any room. Lamps not only provide the mood lighting of your dreams, but they also allow you to add more personality to your space. The Property Brothers love using lighting to warm up reading nooks and workspaces. Modern homes need this abstract gold lamp or this patterned black lamp. Or if you’re going for more of an industrial look, try this textured silver lamp.

3. Use a Rug to Tie the Room Together

Rugs can separate rooms, tie in your room’s color palette and give your space that extra “wow” factor with added color and texture. The brothers have pulled out this trick numerous times to bring balance and harmony to their makeovers. This hint is especially helpful for open-concept rooms that need separation. The Scott brothers have a line of different rug options to choose from, including this black and white geometric pattern and a floral burst design.

4. Warm Up a Space with Gold Accents

Gold End Table

Most, if not every, Property Brothersmakeover includes a sprinkling of gold accents throughout the home. You can easily incorporate this metallic with small home decor pieces like planters or sculptures or go bigger by styling a gold end table in your living room or bedroom. Gold accents are a great way to add a pop of color to an all-white kitchen, too. Just swap out cabinet knobs and drawer pulls with shiny, beautiful gold ones. Don’t miss Drew and Jonathan’s top-tier ideas for kitchen cabinets!

5. Remember That Functionality Is as Important as Style

Sure, it’s important to have a cute space, but functionality is key to keeping that space nice, tidy and organized. Limit counter clutter by placing toiletries or fruit inside a sleek decorative bowl. Or free up essential cabinet space by moving your drinkware and liquor to a bar cabinet or bar cart and using a cute flatware caddy to have utensils within easy reach.

Before you start a DIY project, consult Jonathan Scott’s favorite paint colors and painting tips that minimize cleanup.

Collage Of Tiktok Showing How To Put On Duvet Cover

Duvet covers can be tricky to maneuver. (Don’t even get me started with fitted or flat sheets.) After several years of trying to cram my duvet into my duvet cover, I’ve finally discovered a fuss-free trick that I’ve used time and time again.

How to Put on a Duvet Cover

This duvet cover hack goes by an assortment of fun nameslike “California roll” or “burrito-style.” Ultimately, this trick is just what it sounds like: Roll your duvet and duvet cover together to easily snap, zip or tie the two together. Follow these seven easy steps to get started (or follow the step-by-step video below if you’re more of a visual learner!).

@_forthehomeHow to easily put on a duvet cover! #learnontiktok #tiktokpartner #homedecorhacks #homedecor ROBOT – Simen Andreas Knudsen

1. Purchase the Best Bedding

If you don’t have a duvet cover you’re absolutely in love with, check out some of our editor’s top picks. Personally, I recently bought a linen set from Bed Threads that I absolutely adore. What drew me to Bed Threads was their build-your-bundle package where you can mix and match different colors for your bedding setfrom duvet covers to pillowcases! (We went with a mix of sage and white for a clean look.)

2. Turn the Cover Inside Out

Turn the cover inside out and flatten it directly onto your bed. Double-check to make sure the cover’s opening is at the end of the bed.

3. Lay Duvet On Top of the Cover

Place and line up your duvet directly on top of your cover. Then, tie the duvet cover to the duvet.

4. Roll the Duvet and Cover Together

Roll tightly togetherburrito-styleto the end of the bed. Make sure to keep both lined up from the start to ensure easy rolling.

5. Invert Cover Opening at the Ends

Here’s the trickiest part. Invert the duvet cover over the end of your duvet so the duvet tucks inside the cover. Then, attach the duvet cover to the duvet by tieing, buttoning or zipping it up.

6. Unroll and You’re Done!

Now, all you have to do is unroll! Unroll and flatten your finished duvet on top of your top sheet and other bedding. Decorate with pillows and enjoy your cozy duvet.

While we love a classic charcuterie board layered with meat and cheese, sometimes we want to set out a spread that’s a little spicier, a lot saucier and perfect for any occasion, from a weeknight family dinner to a festive gathering. Enter the taco board.

Taco boards are a fun take on a build-your-own taco bar, with everything you need for the ultimate taco all on one platter. We loaded up our taco board with everything a hungry eater could want, like hard shells, soft shells, refried beans, shredded cheese, salsa and much morebut you can make your taco board as packed or as simple as you like. It’ll still be a hit!

How to Make a Taco Board

Taco board with guacamole, chips, and salsa on blue wood background

This taco board from the Taste of Home Test Kitchen is a delicious mix of homemade recipes and store-bought items. Senior Food Stylist Shannon Norris put it all together to create a mouth-wateringand eye-catching!taco board.

What to Include on Your Taco Board

Tool You’ll Need

How to Build Your Taco Board

1. Break out your tools

While you could use your prettiest cheese board for this taco “charcuterie” board, we suggest reaching for a baking sheet, or any rimmed tray that’ll keep your taco toppings from rolling off. Then pull out your taco board ingredients to start your assembly. Shannon suggests using two baking pans:one for hot foods and one for cold foods. Once assembled, push the items together to get the single board look.

2. Add your taco filling

Shannon recommends starting off with your main proteins because, well, they are the main event. Serve them in larger bowls so there’s enough for everyone. Arrange the bowls on opposite sides of your board to maintain visual balance.

3. Arrange your taco shells

Fan your taco shells around each large bowl. They’ll take up a bit of room, so you may only want to set out two taco shell options. You can place additional shells in baskets near your taco board for second helpings.

4. Find spots for the toppings and sauces

Fill up smaller bowls with your guacs, sauces and salsas and add decorative serving spoons to each. In the gaps on your board, add an array of colorful toppings, like cheese, jalapenos and sliced pepper. Extra toppings can be served in additional bowls or bright plates near your taco board.

Shannon’s tip: Not everything has to be homemade! A blend of made-from-scratch and store-bought items can be just as impressive and fun on your taco board.

5. Fill up your table

Depending on how many people you’re feeding, you may want to surround the taco board with other taco night recipes. Or go for a charcuterie board theme and add a baked potato board or one of these cheese board ideas.

Taco Board Tips

What drinks pair well with a taco board?

Sip on margaritas (hello, watermelon margarita!) or a Mexican soda or beer while you’re snacking on your board. Or put your tequila to use in a refreshing ranch water.

What salsa should I use for my taco board?

Use any salsa recipe your heart desires! You can’t go wrong with chunky salsaor roasted tomato salsa, or add a mango pineapple salsa to your spread.

Can I make my own homemade taco seasoning?

It’s easy to make your own homemade taco seasoning. Plus, making your own seasoning is cheaper than store-bought mixes, and will likely have half the sodium.

What other foods can I pair with my taco board?

Taco boards pair well with so many tasty appetizers like jalapeno poppers or a side of tortilla chips and grilled guacamole. These taco-inspired appetizers are crowd-pleasers, too.

What Is Elf on the Shelf, and How Does It Work? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/what-is-elf-on-the-shelf/ Tue, 30 Nov 2021 16:20:51 +0000 http://origin-www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1337686 This little elf is winning over families' hearts across the world. But, you may find yourself asking, how does Elf on the Shelf work?

The post What Is Elf on the Shelf, and How Does It Work? appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
We’ve all been there. You’re scrolling through Facebook and Pinterest and you keep seeing that elf. Yes, the one with the mischievous smile that gets into over-the-top, precarious situations. I know I’ve caught myself wondering, what is the hype with this little elf anyway? Well, after a little digging, I’m ready to dish to you everything you’ve been dying to know about this new Christmas tradition.

What Is Elf on the Shelf?

Elf on the Shelf is a Christmas tradition started by Carol Aebersold and her twin daughters, Chanda Bell and Christa Pitts. Each Elf on the Shelf kit consists of the Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition book and a Scout Elf.

The story goes that Santa’s Scout Elves fly to the North Pole each night of December to report to Santa if children have been behaving (or misbehaving). The elves then fly back and hide in a new spot for the children to find him the next morning. Typically, Scout Elves love to hide in sneaky spots around the house and sometimes they like to stir up mischief the night before.

All in all, this quirky tradition is what your family makes of it. Dedicated Elf on the Shelf parents scour Pinterest and follow hashtags like #elfontheshelfideas or #elfontheshelf on Instagram for inspiration for where and how to place their elf each night. Some parents wait all year to bake sweet treats to welcome back Elf on the Shelf while othersenjoy the simplicity of reading the book nightly to their children.

Your elf tradition can be as over-the-top or laid back as you’d prefer. No matter which way you take it, all that matters is that you’re starting a Christmas tradition your children will remember for years to come.

When Did Elf on the Shelf Start?

Elf on the Shelf humbly began as one of Carol Aebersold’s childhood traditions with her family’s elf, Fisbee. In 2005, Carol and her two daughters decided to share their childhood traditions with the world. Together, they began a worldwide media sensation when they self-published their book and elf kit, Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition.

The magic reallt took hold in 2007 when Jennifer Garner was seen with the Elf on the Shelf book tucked under her arm. Soon after, The Today Show jumped on the story and the rest is history.

Since then, the family has created other products inspired by ideas sent in from kids across the globe. Currently, they’ve expanded from theirtraditional Elf on the Shelf kit into Elf Pets, an elf clothing lineand evenElf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical in select cities this year.

Even with its growing popularity, Carol, Chanda and Christa want to keep one thing constant: to appreciate the elves’ simplicity. Christa shared with the Huffpost: “Everyone can enjoy The Elf on the Shelf for its general simplicity. It doesn’t need batteries. It’s all about imagination and some Christmas magic in the mix.”

If you’re looking for a heartwarming Elf on the Shelf alternative, you can try doing “Journey to Bethlehem” this Christmas.

What Are the Rules for Elf on the Shelf?

This Elf on the Shelf tradition is easy to uphold and follows three simple rules: First, children cannot touch the elf or he will lose his magic. If this happens, no worries, just set some cinnamon next to the elf overnight and his magical powers will revive. Second, the elf does not speak or move while the children are awake (Psstfor all parents out there, wait until your kids are asleep before you move your elf). The biggest rule of all? Have fun!

What Age Should You Start Elf on the Shelf?

The Elf on the Shelf tradition can be started at any age, but most parents recommend waiting until your child is between the ages of 2 and 3. They claim it’s the perfect sweet spot for children to appreciate and understand the elves’ magic while establishing this family tradition at a young age.

Families with older children can also join in on the fun by helping the parents set up the elves each night for their younger siblings or parents can tailor the elves’ shenanigans to their age level. No matter the age, there’s always magic to be found with Elf on the Shelf.

When Does Elf on the Shelf Come?

Your elf can appear any time you’d like, however many elves appear between November 24th and December 1st so they can have a month’s worth of fun until the elves fly back to the North Pole with Santa on Christmas Eve night.

Elf on the Shelf Ideas

Not sure where to start? Here are some of our favorite Elf on the Shelf ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Mischief in the kitchen: Have your elf create flour snow angels, snacking on a heaping plate of elf spaghetti or serving up mini pancakes.
  • Special delivery: On the first night back, have your elf set up in a present-wrapped box.
  • Sneaky footprints: Dust a footprint stencil with flour or powdered sugar and prop your elf up in a running stance.
  • Dress up: Dress up your elf in a fun customized sweater or with any of these fun Elf on the Shelf accessories below.

How to Make the Best Veggie Burger https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/best-veggie-burger/ Tue, 27 Jul 2021 10:50:59 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1443103 There's a new burger in town! Our Test Kitchen shares their very best veggie burger recipe.

The post How to Make the Best Veggie Burger appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>

Whether you’re a vegetarian or you’re trying to cut down on your meat consumption, meat-eaters and vegetarians alike praise veggie burger recipes. And to be honest, I’ve hopped on the trend, too. I’d be lying if I said that veggie burgers haven’t become my latest obsession, whether it’s trying new recipes or different plant-based burger brands. But as much as I love them, I kept running into the same issues; their texture was too mushy or the taste was just a little too bland.

That was before I tried this recipe. Let’s just say there’s a reason why this recipe is called the bestveggie burger.

Taste of Home’s Associate Culinary Producer, Sarah Tramonte, has created a delicious new take on the classic veggie burger recipe to minimize mushiness while still dishing out smoky-savory flavor complete with cumin, smoked paprika, fennel seed and hints of sun-dried tomato. Drooling yet?

Tools You’ll Need

Food Processor: Don’t let the price intimidate you, the benefits of this Cuisinart food processorare worth the extra cash. Our Test Kitchen named this the best food processor as it has simple, easy-to-use controls. They were also impressed with how quickly and finely it chops food of all sizes.

Baking Sheet: Our non-stick metal baking sheetevenly cooks your favorite dishes. Its embossed design increases airflow to foods for all-over browning. Plus, it looks beautiful.

Skillet: This durable and versatile skillet can be used for just about anything. From these tasty veggie burgers to whipping up quesadillas, your stove-top recipes are cooked to perfection in our skillet. The best part? Our 12.5″ skilletis non-stick, so no need to use up too much oil while cooking.

The Best Veggie Burger Recipe

Key Ingredients in the Best Veggie Burger

Let’s talk about what ingredientsand more importantly, why these ingredientsmake this the best veggie burger.

Chia Seeds & Oats

So many veggie burgers struggle with being mushy, but thanks to chia seeds and oats, this veggie burger recipe has some bite. These ingredients also bind the burger together, so you don’t have to worry about the patty crumbling in the bun as you eat it.

Walnuts

A food’s texture is so important, especially when we’re creating foods that taste like other foods (hello, cauliflower pizza crust!). In this case, walnuts help imitate the texture of meat in the veggie burger, and ensure you’re eating a firm patty reminiscent of meat.

Sun-Dried Tomatoes & Shallots

Something about burgers just makes your mouth water, and umami is typically what does the trick. In this veggie burger recipe, sun-dried tomatoes and shallots work together to create that savory taste that you shouldn’t have to miss just because it’s not meat.

Liquid Smoke

When people eat a veggie burger, they’re often looking for something close to a regular burger in flavor. That’s where liquid smoke comes in handy, which imitates the smoky flavor of grilled meat. You can easily purchase liquid smoke on Amazon.

Barbecue Sauce Baste

Basting the veggie burgers with barbecue sauce also helps give them that grilled meat flavor, just like the liquid smoke. Plus, the barbecue sauce helps create the shine that a beef burger would have straight off the grill.

Now that you know why certain ingredients are important to the recipe, here’s the full list:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • teaspoon ground fennel seed
  • teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoons oil from sun-dried tomatoes
  • cup shredded carrot
  • 1 large shallot, minced
  • 2 tablespoons oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 2 teaspoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Optional: barbecue sauce, toasted hamburger buns, Sriracha mayo, lettuce, red onion and tomato

Directions

Step 1: Bake the Beans

Start off by preheating the oven to 325F. Spread the black beans evenly on a parchment-lined rimmed baking pan and bake just until beans start to split open, about 6-8 minutes.

Test Kitchen tip: Sarah urges you to not skip this step. It’s what gives the burgers more bite and makes her veggie burger simply the best.

Step 2: Toast the Nuts and Spices

While the beans are cooking, set your skillet over medium heat and add walnuts, cumin, fennel and smoked paprika, stirring frequently until fragrant, 2-3 minutes.Remove from the pan and let cool.

Test Kitchen tip: Keep an eye on the walnuts, they can go from browned to burnt in the blink of an eye!

Step 3: Bring on the Veggies

In the same skillet, heat up the oil from your sun-dried tomatoes over medium heat. Add the carrot, shallot and sun-dried tomatoes; cook, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes or when the carrots become tender. Add the minced garlic and cook for about a minute longer. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.

Step 4: Break Out the Food Processor

Your patty mix is almost ready. Transfer thecarrot mixture to a food processor and add the cooked beans and walnut mixture, plus the oats, chia seeds, soy sauce and garlic salt. Pulse until combined. Ta-da! Here’s the ‘meat’ of your best-ever veggie burger.

Shape into four 4-inch patties.

Step 5: Cook

In the same skillet over medium heat, cook the patties in olive oil until browned, 3-4 minutes on each side. If desired, baste with barbecue sauce and serve on buns with toppings of your choice. Yum.

Nutrition Tips

Vegans, rejoice! This burger is vegetarian AND vegan. No dairy or egg products are used to make this savory veggie burger.

Shaping the Veggie Burgers

Some veggie burger mixtures are a pain to work with as you shape them into patties, whether they’re crumbly or too mushy. Not this recipe! The mixture is a bit firmer than playdough, so you won’t struggle to shape it with your hands.

Once you shape the patty, Sarah recommends you flatten the top with something like the bottom of a measuring cup, and then pop it straight into the skilletno chilling time is necessary. You’re welcome to use a mold to shape the burgers, but you might not need it!

Meal Prep Instructions

If you’re looking to make these burgers ahead of time, simply assemble the uncooked veggie patties and store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. We like to use a piece of parchment paper to keep the patties from sticking together.

These veggie burgers typically last about a week in the fridge. When you’re craving a veggie burger, remove one from your fridge and into a hot pan.

You can also freeze this recipe for later.

Veggie Burger Topping Ideas

Now, here’s the fun part! You can customize your veggie burger with all sorts of fun toppings. Spread some homemade guacamolefor a Tex-Mex veggie burger or spinach-basil pesto for an Italian twist. Check out our extensive burger toppings list for inspiration (there are plenty of vegetarian options in there!).

Test Kitchen tip: Sarah recommends topping this burger with a flavored aioli like garlic peppercorn. Or try slathering on a little mayo with melted gouda cheese and chopped red onion on a pretzel bun.

What to Make with Veggie Burgers

You can pair your veggie burgers with anything your heart desires. From homemade air-fryer potato chips to a tasty side salad to herbed grilled corn on the cob, you’ve got endless sides to try out. Sarah recommendssweet potato fries with chipotle mayo, corn salad, grilled veggies, watermelon with feta and mintor homemade sweet potato chips. Mmm!

After long days of swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding at the cabin, my family and I gather around the bonfire before settling in for the night. It has become quite the family tradition. Some nights are for lounging where others are for hosting bonfire parties with our extended family and friends (and depending on the night, the tiki bar comes out to play!).

Here are some of my family’s tried and true tips for hosting the ultimate bonfire party.

My family loves any excuse to bring out the tiki bar, but there are plenty of other fun bonfire ideas to choose from. Some of our other favorites are glow-in-the-dark (with glow-in-the-dark attire, of course), patriotic and an outdoor movie bonfire. No matter which theme you choose, they’re all simple to set up on a whim. Looking for more themes? Learn how to host a murder mystery party.

Bonfire party theme ideas:

Start with a Fire Pit

The fire itself is the main event, so you’ll want to be prepared when it comes to your fire pit. If you don’t already have one, you can choose from fire tables, tabletop fire fixtures, chimineas and standard fire pitswhatever fits your space and needs best. (FYI, we’re obsessed with the Breeo fire pit.) If you’re handy, you can even build a fire pit yourself.

Before you even pick which is best for your space, read up on local laws. Some cities have specific ordinances regarding recreational backyard fires, and you’ll want to ensure you’re following guidelines to keep you and your neighbors safe.

Set up the Space

How To Throw A Bonfire Party

Make sure there is ample seating for your guests, who’ll want to be front row to the warmth. Set up some stools, lawn chairs or benches. We also suggest tucking blankets into baskets for when the sun has fully set and the temps have finally dropped.

Make Your Own Mood Lighting

Bonfire Lights

If you’re feelin’ extra fiery, create cute and economical tea light holders out of soup cans. Simply use a hammer and nail to punch holes in any pattern you choose. Then, place them around your backyard for a glowy effect or cluster them together on your serving table to act as a centerpiece.

And for a fun activity to further light up your backyard, look to hand-held fireworks, such as party poppers or sparklers. To adorably display the latter, fill a metal pail with sand or small pebbles, then arrange the sparklers, metal side down, in the bottom. Voila!

Plan a Bonfire Party Menu

Bonfire Party Food

And what’s a party without food? Hot dogs, brats and pudgy pies are the quintessential bonfire foods that you absolutely need around the fire. These recipes will help you take your bonfire party menu above and beyond.

  • Favorite Hot Chocolate: Sweeten things up by serving this steamy drink from insulated bottles or mugs. Trust usthe rich sipper is best enjoyed fireside. Plus, it offers a fun new take on the quintessential bonfire combo of chocolate and marshmallows.
  • Cheese & Pimiento Spread: For partygoers with a taste for the southern classicor even just for those who love cheesy goodness, this spread is perfect. Pair it with veggies or, to match the twinkly night sky above, star-shaped crackers.
  • Watermelon & Cucumber Salsa: For something on the fresher side, look no further than this condiment. It’s delectable piled high on everything, including hot dogs!
  • S’mores Cupcakes: For another variation on classic s’mores, your crew will love these bite-size cakes. With toasty frosting and customizable toppings, they’re hard to resist.

Or, if traditional s’mores are what you’re craving, make sure you’re stocked with roasting sticks, marshmallows, graham crackers and your selection of chocolate candy bars. Don’t stop at just Hershey’s bars! Garnish ’em with Reese’s, Crunch bars, even Butterfingers. Yum!
